The story

On my way to Swansea, I stopped at the Silverstone wind tunnel, where I worked with EZ Gains to fine-tune my bike position and equipment before heading on to the race.

The swim got off to another chaotic start, and I wasn’t the only one caught off guard. I gradually worked my way up along the outside of the field, rejoining my usual swim group by the halfway point. However, I came out of the water at the back of the group and lost contact in the first transition, where the rough tarmac prevented me from running at full speed.

What followed was a painful chase over the opening kilometres of the bike leg. I knew I couldn’t afford to let that group get away, so I gave it everything for five kilometres — and thankfully managed to bridge the gap. Once back in the group, I focused on recovering as the relentless pace began to take its toll on others. We eventually caught the leaders, and I headed onto the run at the front of the race on my IRONMAN Pro Series debut.

I soon moved into third, but the podium was anything but secure. Simon Viain, a strong runner, came flying past, and for a while it looked as though a podium finish was slipping away. But his fast start eventually took its toll. I kept digging, fought my way back through sheer determination and secured my first IRONMAN Pro Series podium!
